Delighted to report early results show worm poo to be a brilliant plant fertilizer. Those tomato seeds planted with poo have shot up very fast. Check out the photos.

Time for something a little different. I’m interested in eating well and eating healthily. I’m also interested in sustainability and eco-lifestyles. To that end, three years ago I began vermicomposting under my kitchen sink in my little Shanghai apartment. Today I made my first major harvest of worm castings and wanted to share some photos with you. It’s quite amazing to me that I now have 15 litres of composting tea, and 4kg of worm castings: all from a small box under my kitchen sink!

To most foreigners who live in Shanghai, The Avocado Lady requires no introduction. Her store on Wulumuqi Road is full with cheese, milk, butter, yoghurt, bacon, sausages, wine, cereals, brown rice, spaghetti, tomato paste, minced beef, duck breast, pine nuts, walnuts, cookies and so much more, including all kinds of vegetables and a selection of fruit.
She relates in price to a ‘wet market’, boasts the the diversity of City Shop, and her customer service is wonderful. “Sorry Mrs. Avocado Lady, I forgot my wallet”. “Pay next time, next time!”
Likealocal used to be about ordering food in Chinese restaurants which had no English speaking staff, and no English language menu. That was the likealocal concept in a nutshell.
To reinvent likealocal, I will have to move with the times. Covering great places to purchase food for home cooking…is very much coverage of living “like a local”.

Nearly five years ago, in 2008 I made my last post in likealocal. I always thought that one day when I had time I would start again and update all the old content. My old content is backed-up but now I can’t open the backup files because the new version of wordpress will not recognize them. I hope to find my way through this difficulty because there was so much information in there that I need to start again!
